VideoVortex XI conference report

Video technology has radically altered the ways in which we produce, consume and circulate images, influencing the aesthetics and possibilities of moving image cultures, as well as yielding a rich body of scholarship across various disciplines. Given its ease of access and use, video has historically been aligned with media activism and collaborative work, further enabled by digital platforms, that facilitate transnational networks even as they exist within heightened systems of surveillance. Having emerged as the driving force behind the web, social media, and the internet of things, video, as Ina Blom (2016) suggests, is endowed with life-like memory and agency. As witnessed in the recent network crash in America as a result of the hacking of web cameras, video overload can even become a cause for infrastructural vulnerability. While the infrastructures of video in Europe and America may almost be taken for granted, in many parts of the global South, video exists across uneven conditions, and this invites engagements with video history and theory that are attentive to these varied lives and forms of video. Video Vortex XI proposed to place emphasis on these ‘other’ video cultures, which have largely evaded scrutiny under the fiction of video’s universalism.

Besides the Screen conference

The 2016 conference in Coventry marks the end of a cycle of activities sponsored by the British
Arts & Humanities Research Council , meaning to articulate an international research network
devoted to the many territories of dispute in the contemporary arrangement of audiovisual
media, such as piracy, curating, and projection practices.

The conference series Besides the Screen began in London in 2010 at Goldsmiths College,
University of London. The event meant to gather research projects focused on an apparently
secondary subject in the field of screen studies: the instances of film distribution and
consumption. By that time, it already seemed important to promote debates around these topics,
considering that some of the most meaningful effects caused by computer networks on
audiovisual media are connected not to image production, but rather to the emergence of new
dynamics of circulation – from peer­ to ­peer filesharing to mobile screens, from VJing to
video­ on­ demand.

Projection, the Moving Image and the Transition to Digital
Charlotte Brunsdon, Michael Pigott and Richard Wallace
This plenary session will be presented by Charlotte Brunsdon, Michael Pigott and Richard
Wallace who are working together on the AHRC­funded Projection Project (2014­18). This
multi­method project takes projection as its starting point in an exploration of cinema’s transition
to digital. In this presentation we will outline some of the premises of the project, and present
findings which range from interviews with former projectionists to sounds from the projection
box. Our project includes archival and oral history research into the neglected history of the
cinema projectionist through which we challenge the primacy of the image in theorisations of
cinematic specificity, revealing in contrast the role of hidden labours of cinema exhibition. While
we are attentive to the human cost of the transition to digital in terms of redundancies and
redeployments, we are also concerned with the new possibilities of the emergent uses of digital
projection outside of the cinema space. Here we attend to practices – such as projection
mapping ­ enabled by the portability and flexibility of digital projectors, and situate them within a
long history of projection. By investigating the role of outdoor projection as a means of both
advertising and protest, as well as the figure of the nightclub VJ, the project seeks to identify
continuities and differences that pertain within the extra­cinematic everyday uses of moving
image projection. As a multi­part presentation we will seek to give a sense of both what is
hidden and lost in the projection box, and what is imagined outside it in a wide range of venues
and practices.
Professor Charlotte Brunsdon has been Principal Investigator of the Projection Project. Her
most recent research had been concerned with the spaces of film and television and she has
just completed a book on T
elevision Cities t o be published by Duke University Press in 2017.
Dr Michael Pigott is co­investigator on The Projection Project and author of J oseph Cornell
versus Cinema (2013). He teaches visual cultures and audio­visual performance at the
University of Warwick. He also works as an artist and has been known to do some VJing.
Dr Richard Wallace is Research Fellow on the Projection Project. He has research interests in
British film and television history and technology, historical research methods and screen
documentary and has published in the J ournal of British Cinema and Television.

after.video @ LibreGraphics

Adnan presented the after.video project at the LibreGraphics conference.

after.video is a new online service which will be making available a series of variably aged video presentations which cover a collection of topics. What it represents then is a repackaging (Assemblages) of material from a variety of sources, presumably professionally edited and augmented. If you visit their website, you see they are not quite operational, and that this is a paid subscription service.

Now in its 11th year, the international Libre Graphics Meeting turns its focus for 2016 to the theme “Other Dimensions”, encompassing time-based media and the third dimension, new additions to LGM’s established focus on graphics.

From its first edition in 2006, held in Lyon, France, Libre Graphics Meeting has been a locus for software contributors, artists, designers, and users to come together and share their knowledge and to experience camaraderie. This year will see four days of presentations, talks, hacking sessions, workshops, and meetings.

Prominent software projects such as GIMP, Inkscape, Scribus, GNOME, and others will come together to demonstrate the progress on their projects and to discuss them within the context of the larger Libre Graphics community. LGM 2016 will play host to animators, architects, artists, book designers, cartographers, developers, documenters, educators, engravers, graphic designers, git visualizers, hackers, photographers, rasterizers, reverse engineers, tool makers, type designers, and video archivers (among others!).

The 2016 edition of LGM will have a full program of workshops, presentations and talks across the entire spectrum of Free/Libre and Open Source graphics projects and communities. 32C3: 30th Chaos Communication Congress

This year our friends Anton & Karsten from the Goto10 collective visited the 30th CCC congress.

Five lectures I made a note of:

1) Internet Lanscapes

In Internet Landscapes, Evan Roth with discuss his work as it relates to visualizing, archiving and understanding the Internet and its effects on culture with a focus on the misuse of communication technologies. Roth will trace his personal and creative history within an Internet landscape that has changed significantly in the last 16 years. The presentation will include a range of work culminating in his more recent pilgrimages to the beaches of the UK, New Zealand and Sweden, where submarine Internet fiber optic cables reach the land. Armed with an array of paranormal technologies, Roth will recount his personal quest to visualize and reconnect with a changing Internet landscape.

2) Datahavens

Datahavens have long been discussed as a solution to user security and privacy needs. Instinctively, the idea of physical locations where servers for communications, financial privacy, and other services can work is easily understood and seems appealing. As a founder of the HavenCo datahaven on Sealand in 2000, I saw firsthand the potential and the pitfalls of this approach.

As a founder of the HavenCo datahaven on Sealand in 2000, I saw firsthand the potential and the pitfalls of this approach.

We will discuss the concept behind datahavens, some specific examples, the legal and technical challenges they face, and how specifically HavenCo failed. While projects to date have largely failed, there is hope for the future, both in the physical datahaven approach and in technical measures, so there is good reason to be optimistic.

3) Netzpolitik in der Schweiz

2015 und 2016 sind wichtige Jahre für die Netzpolitik in der Schweiz, denn die Parlamente entscheiden sowohl die Revision des BÜPF (Bundesgesetz betreffend die Überwachung des Post- und Fernmeldeverkehrs) als auch das NDG (Nachrichtendienstgesetz).

Die beiden Gesetze würden den entsprechenden Bundesbehörden deutlich mehr Handlungsfreiheiten einräumen, wenn es um das Sammeln von Daten auf Vorrat und das Überwachen der Telekommunikation geht. Im Vortrag geben wir eine Übersicht über die beiden Gesetze und sprechen darüber, welche Auswirkungen sie unserer Meinung nach haben werden und was wir dagegen unternehmen und bereits unternommen haben.

Einige der am stärksten kritisierten Punkte der Gesetze sind:

    • Dem Nachrichtendienst wird der Einsatz von Staatstrojanern gestattet,
    • Dem Nachrichtendienst wird exzessiver Zugriff auf den Internetverkehr in der Schweiz gestattet (Kabelaufklärung),
    • Die Vorratsdatenspeicherung in der Schweiz wird weiter ausgebaut.

Wir gehören zum CCC-CH und zur Digitalen Gesellschaft (Schweiz). In der Schweiz haben die Stimmberechtigten die Möglichkeit, das Referendum zu ergreifen. Gelingt es, innerhalb von einhundert Tagen nach in Kraft treten der Referendumsfrist 50’000 Unterschriften zu sammeln, so kommt der Gesetzesentwurf vor das Stimmvolk, welches das letzte Wort hat. Doch 50’000 Unterschriften wollen erst mal gesammelt werden… Leider werden die Gesetze zeitlich versetzt verabschiedet, so dass die Referendumsfristen nicht, wie ursprünglich erhofft, zusammenfallen. Es ist durchaus denkbar, dass es sich dabei um ein politisches Manöver handelt, da das BÜPF doch deutlich mehr Gegner hat als das NDG.

Im Falle des NDG hat die Digitale Gesellschaft, zusammen mit der Piratenpartei Schweiz, grundrechte.ch und dem CCC-CH, unter nachrichtendienstgesetz.ch eine Plattform erstellt, um die Unterschriftensammlung zu koordinieren. Zum Zeitpunkt des 32C3 wird die Referendumsfrist wohl schon beinahe vorbei sein. Wir berichten, wie das Unterschriftensammeln verlaufen ist, was das jetzt zur Folge hat und was wir daraus lernen können – auch in Hinsicht auf das BÜPF, dessen Referendumsfrist wohl kurz nach dem 32c3 beginnen wird. Glücklicherweise hat das BÜPF deutlich mehr Gegner als das NDG, weshalb sich die Initianten von stopbuepf.ch gute Chancen erhoffen.

4) Totalitarianism & Cyberspace

n my talk I am 1) discussing philosophical concepts of privacy, especially Hannah Arendt’s philosophy. I am 2) explaining why in a liberal-democratic system we need to protect our privacy and 3) what we can morally do to prevent catastrophes such as a totalitarian system from happening again. With Hannah Arendt’s arguments and her analysis of totalitarian systems in mind, I am referring to three examples from today’s privacy discussions: cybermobbing, Behavioral Advertising and secret services.

5) The State of Internet Censorship

The techniques to control access to the Internet, and the ability to bring transparency to those processes are both continuing to evolve. We’ll give an update on the landscape of online information controls, and our ability to measure them.

The talk will give an update on current country-level practices, the techniques in use to measure them, and an overview of major tools in use.

Over the past couple years, restrictions on Internet access have grown even more ubiquitous. Many take the form of URL or Domain blacklists implemented by western countries, along with increased levels of self censorship on social platforms with user generated content.

The measurement community continues to play a catch-up game. Through a mixture of watching legislature, an increased understanding of what we need to build to keep track of internet controls, and discoveries of side channels that let us externally measure connectivity, we’re making progress!

Firefox OS died

It looks like the promising Firefox OS phone alternative just died.

Firefox OS was publicly demonstrated in February 2012, on Android-compatible smartphones. By December 16, 2014, Firefox OS phones were offered from 14 operators in 28 countries throughout the world.

On December 8, 2015, Mozilla announced that it would stop sales of Firefox OS smartphones through carriers. Mozilla later announced that Firefox OS smartphones would be discontinued by May 2016, as the development of “Firefox OS for smartphones” would cease after the release of version 2.6.

CipherSongs WEB

CipherSongs: Trustless is the second in a series of performance and installation works reflecting on issues surrounding encrypted network communication technologies. It is a data driven, audio visual installation/performance which responds to real-time data from the Bitmessage service. Bitmessage is a decentralised, peer-to-peer, trustless communications protocol. The service became particularly popular after the 2013 Snowden revelations exposing the widespread collection and analysis of communications metadata. These works respond to the threat to our “right to a private life” posed by the planned amendments in the UK to the Data Retention and Investigatory Powers Bill (aka The Snoopers Charter). This amendment seeks to criminalise the use of encrypted communications in the UK. In this context, CipherSongs functions as the ‘canary in the coal mine’, an early warning system where the disappearance of song indicates a dangerous problem within the system.

This performance is a dialogue between the on-stage performers and the streams of encrypted network data. The data is picked up by performers and improvised into the physical performance space as well as streamed via the TOR hidden service. Alongside the data driven sonic improvisations are woven textual interpretations of both factual and fictional encrypted content.

Contesting the “Dark Web”. CipherSongs: Trustless an installation for encrypted data streams

The abstract of his paper for BFX describes CipherSongs as:

CipherSongs: Trustless is the first in a proposed series of performance and installation works reflecting on issues surrounding encrypted network communication technologies. These works respond to the threat to our “right to a private life” (Article 8 of the Human Rights Act 1998) posed by the recently elected Conservative government’s plans to amend the Data Retention and Investigatory Powers Act (DRIPA) (Home Office, 2014). The proposed amendment to DRIPA, commonly referred to as “The Snoopers’ Charter”, seeks to abolish the use of encrypted communications in the UK16 . In this context, CipherSongs functions as the ‘canary in the coal mine’, an early warning system where the disappearance of song indicates a dangerous problem within the system.

The installation operates as an agent within the system it references, it is actively engaged with the data and political context that are its subjects. As nodes within both the Tor network and the Bitmessanger system it provides extra robustness and diversity to their decentralised infrastructures. It critiques the dominant assertions of the mainstream or “strategic media” which aligns users of strong cryptography with the “Four Horsemen of the Infocalypse”: drug dealers, paedophiles, money launderers and terrorists (May, 1994).

Believe it or not, there are many users and ICT professionals needing to opt-out from systemd, for various reasons for instance to keep compatibility with old scripts or to keep supporting embedded setups, or simply because they don’t believe systemd is going to work. As a matter of fact, from its first announcement in November 2014 until today the Devuan project received enormous media attention and a steady stream of donations up to approximately 10.000€.

This lightning talk will illustrate the state of things in Devuan development, which is quickly approaching its 1.0 Beta release.

For the 1.0 release Devuan will derives its own installer and package repositories from Debian Jessie, applying the necessary modifications to remove systemd. Our objective for 2015 is to make anyone using Debian Wheezy or Jessie able to update or switch to Devuan 1.0 – and we are very close to enter Beta stage.

As of today we have a continuous integration system in place and fully functional based on gitlab, jenkins and a custom repository software called Amprolla. We are also supporting the development of a new, minimal susbstitute for udev which written from scratch and is called vdev.

Panos-small“What I had in mind is that the research would focus on an area covered by a local network either permanently or at least during the duration of the project. This network would host locally crafted educational material and floss applications that would showcase emerging tools and technologies. This could be as simple as a single web hosting device offering short-range access or a community mesh network with broader objectives. “

This preferred area of focus may well coincide with existing mesh node installations.. it’s along the creek so there are indigenous social housing, boating, artistisan, hoodlum, drinking and eating communities as well as inevitable high rise developments and mixed emotions!

SPC has capacity in it’s network to offer uplinks to Mazi for the duration..  Mesh solutions are great for mobile network nodes and for resilience in an unstable environment. Primed with a set of great locations and willing collaborators aplenty, a point to point radial model will ensure greater stability and higher speeds for community needs. We already have a few low power servers and resources available and have set up a mazi subdomain of spc.org

SE9 mateThere is a swell of social, cultural and creative interest along Creekside in Deptford where we have enjoyed success in the past. We hope to rekindle interest and activity in support of the Mazi workshop program and the adoption of a locally delivered alternative to commercial web dependencies.  Meanwhile the whole area is being “developed” so there are rising blocks on every quarter isolating areas of Deptford which will present a challenge when fixing links and bridging ideas.

The river Ravensbourne snakes from Bromley through Lewisham and opens out after Elverson Road DLR into naturalised riverside alongside Brookmill Park. It retreats into a concrete slot under the A2 at Deptford Bridge DLR and emerges as Deptford Creek up behind LeSoCo (Lewisham College) canyoned by new flats and hotels on the Greenwich side, developments that are set to run the length of Norman Road.

Just as the Creek broadens a little and gets really muddy there is a branch mooring a dozen barges and smaller boats. On land there are a similar array of trailers and vans where people live and work. At the top of Creekside on the corner of Deptford Church Street is the Birdsnest live music pub and local flux point. The yard that wraps around it features Big red Pizza Bus and an array of related performance and construction trades. Other adjacent properties are in progress of reactivation in the sweep of enthusiasm for SE8. APT (artists in perpetuity trust) purchased the old factory building in 1995 and their community of traditional crafts practitioners are at the core of Deptford artist reputation.

Creekside Education Centre  has the only direct access to the creek. Boundless broadband coop was first implanted here in 2004, and is still operating an OWN node today. Over the road is the Crossfields council housing estate, repopulated  by young families,  artists and musicians in 1970’s and regularly commented on. Thereafter it’s a pick n mix run of light industrial yards, Scaffolders, Machinists, Work Units, Art Studios, Cockpit Arts, Laben Dance and bonanza of real estate prospectors with plans to block out the light.

cropped-minesweeper2001A 2nd world war Minesweeper is moored alongside one of few remaining light industrial estates off Norman Road. It has a mixed crew of arty anarchos who screen print t-shirts and lead on refurbishment of the aged hull, host great parties and a flotilla of smaller boats. Madcap Coalition have just moved to one of the remaining warehouses adjacent to the cement works by the Creek Road lifting bridge. Finally at the mouth a new pedestrian swing bridge links between swanky new condo’s before the creek tips into the Thames.

Do-It-Yourself networking refers to a conceptual approach to the use of low-cost hardware and wireless technologies in deploying local communication networks that can operate independently from the public Internet, owned and controlled by local actors.
MAZI means “together” in Greek and the MAZI project invests in this paradigm of technology-supported networking, as a means to bring closer together those living in physical proximity. Through an experienced interdisciplinary consortium, MAZI delivers a DIY networking toolkit that offers tools and guidelines for the easy deployment and customization of local networks and services.
The MAZI toolkit is designed to take advantage of particular characteristics of DIY networking: the de facto physical proximity between those connected; the increased privacy and autonomy; and the inclusive access. Such characteristics are used to promote information exchanges that can develop the location-based collective awareness, as a basis for fostering social cohesion, conviviality, knowledge sharing, and sustainable living.
To achieve this objective, MAZI brings together partners from different disciplines: computer networks, urban planning and interdisciplinary studies, human-computer interaction, community informatics, and design research. These academic partners will collaborate closely with four community partners to ensure that the MAZI toolkit benefits from the grounded experience of citizen engagement.
MAZI draws from the diverse mix of competencies of its consortium to develop a transdisciplinary research framework, which will guide a series of long-term pilot studies in a range of environments, and enhanced by various cross-fertilization events.
The main goal of this process, and its measure of success, is establishing DIY networking as a mainstream technology for enabling the development of collective awareness between those in physical proximity, and the development of surrounding research and theorizing of this approach.
