Seminar Rooms, Ground Floor, Right.\n\nFREE, ALL ARE WELCOME\n\n<strong><span class=\"moz-txt-tag\">*<\/span>AUR(O)RA: EXPLORING ATTRIBUTES OF A LIVE ALGORITHM<span class=\"moz-txt-tag\">*<\/span><\/strong>\n\nThis presentation proposes attributes of 'living computer music', the\nproduct of live algorithmic behaviours. The improvisation system\n\"aur(o)ra\", in development, illustrates how these can inform creative\ndesign.\n\nA live algorithm (LA) is the function of an ideal autonomous system able\nto engage in performance with abilities analogous (if not identical) to a\nhuman musician. An LA is distinct from established AI which generates\nmusic from a rule-base, and is most relevant where structure and character\nare emergent properties, products of interaction with the heterarchical\ngroup. Living computer music diffeers from traditional live electronics\nand fixed-media work by avoiding performer control or explicit a priori\nknowledge (compositional design, notation). Instead, a number of other\nproperties are desirable...\n\nDr Michael Young is Lecturer at Goldsmiths, University of London and\ncomposer. Michael completed a PhD in composition in 1995. He has lectured\nat the University of Wales, Bangor and Oxford Brookes University. His\nmusic has drawn upon a range of live and electroacoustic resources; more\nrecent work has focused on interactive and generative music systems. An\nundercurrent in his output is collaborative and interdisciplinary\npractice; he has worked with jazz musicians and improvisers in the role of\npianist, laptop musician and\/or composer, and has been commissioned to\nprovide electroacoustic music for performance in theatre and gallery\nexhibitions.
